Classification

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID)


Action

  1. Antipyretic

  2. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.


Indications

  1. Mild pain due to MSK disorders

  2. Pain due to trauma


Contraindications

  1. Hypersensitivity to the medication

  2. Oral form contraindicated in pt.’s with hepatic porphyria or a h/o asthma, urticaria or other allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.

  3. Avoid use during late pregnancy or while breast-feeding.


Precautions

Use it cautiously in pt.’s with h/o:

  1. peptic ulcer diseas,

  2. hepatic or renal dysfunction,

  3. cardiac disease,

  4. HTN,

  5. or conditions associated with fluid retention.


Adverse Reactions

  1. Most adverse reactions occur over long term use and are not relevant to EMS.

  2. Anxiety, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, irritability, headache.

  3. Heart Failure, HTN, edema

  4. Tinnitus, laryngeal edema, blurred vision, eye pain etc.

  5. Abdominal pain or cramps, peptic ulceration, bleeding melena, colitis,

  6. Acute renal failure, nephrotic syndrome


Interactions/Compatibility/Stability

Concurrent administration with other drugs, such as glucocorticoids, that produce adverse GI effects may aggravate such effects.


Special Considerations

  1. Use with caution and at reduced dosage in pt.’s with renal impairment.
